The Brasseries Of Paris

The Brasseries Of Paris

$11.52

Step through the doors of forty-nine of the most beautiful brasseries in Paris “where the pleasures of the eye are reunited with the pleasures of the table.” The expansive, bustling brasseries of Paris have been a fixture of the city’s restaurant scene since the 19th century. Serving a classic “brasserie menu” (seafood platters, onion soup, sauerkraut and sausage, for starters), waiters in traditional long white aprons balance overflowing trays as weave their way through the huge dining rooms, decorated in a distinctive Art Nouveau or Art Deco style: stained glass windows, Mucha-inspired murals, glistening mirrors, and Japonica furniture. The authors explore the most beloved of these establishments, each with its own history, cachet, legends and ghosts. “Brasseries rustle with all that makes Parisian life Parisian,” they write, in this charming book that will guide travelers to unforgettable dining experience.

This celebration of the grand culinary tradition at the Ritz Paris features inspirational stories of three great men and is completed with sixty recipes. At the age of thirteen, the young sommelier Cesar Ritz was summarily dismissed by his employer who told him he lacked the flair and talent to succeed in the hospitality business. Of course, Ritz went on to become one of history’s greatest hoteliers, creating the Ritz in Paris and its world-renowned restaurant L’Espadon with the help of renowned chef Auguste Escoffier. Both Escoffier and Ritz loved simplicity, but perfection reigned in their finest of dining rooms. Today, having climbed the ranks at L’Espadon, Michel Roth is now at the helm of this Michelin two-starred restaurant. His menus pay tribute to the heritage of Escoffier, using his classical standard as the backdrop for outstanding contemporary cuisine. The spectacular, award-winning egg-shaped macaroni and truffles dish inspired by Escoffier appears among the sixty featured recipes. Superb photographs accompany each recipe, inviting the reader behind the scenes of this legendary culinary monument.

Historic Restaurants Of Paris

Historic Restaurants Of Paris

$11.86

This guidebook describes one hundred select restaurants and gourmet shops that have delighted Parisians themselves for more than a century, places where the vanished world of 19th-century Paris — and all its romance, history, and beauty — still exists. Crossing these thresholds, the discriminating diner and shopper can step into a gilded Belle Epoque setting favored by Degas, a vintage confectioner that supplied bonbons to Monet, a shaded cafe terrace frequented by Zola. With this guidebook in hand, Hemingway fans can sit at Brasserie Lipp and order the exact meal he described in A Moveable Feast — all items are still on the menu today. From tiny patisseries, cozy bistros and rustic wine bars barely known outside the quarter to bustling brasseries, elegant tea salons, and world famous cafes, The Historic Restaurants of Paris is an indispensible guide to classic cuisine served in settings of startling beauty. Text includes charming anecdotes relating to each restaurant’s history and celebrated former patrons.

Remembrance of Things Paris:

Remembrance of Things Paris:

$15.71

For information on the author Ruth Reichl click here. For sixty years, the best food writers have been sending dispatches from Paris to Gourmet. Collected here for the first time, their essays create a unique and timeless portrait of the world capital of love and food. When the book begins, just after the war, we are in a hungry city whose chefs struggle to find the eggs and cream they need to re-create the cuisine from before the German Occupation. We watch the city re-create itself, the cafes fill with people drinking cafe au lait and reveling in crisp baguettes the triumphant return of three-star cuisine. The next new thing is born and nouvelle cuisine sweeps through a newly chic and modern city. It is all here; the old-time bourgeois dinners, the taste-makers of the fashion world, the hero-chefs. Paris is spread before us, in all its snobbery and refinement, its inimitable pursuit of the fine art of living. Beautifully written, these dispatches from the past are intimate and immediate, allowing us to watch the month-by-month changes in the world’s most wonderful city. Remembrance of Things Paris is a book for anyone who wants to return to a Paris where a buttery madeleine is waiting around every corner. Contributors Include: Samuel Chamberlain, Louis Diat, Naomi Barry, Joseph Weichsberg, Judith and Evan Jones, Don Dresden, Lillian Langseth-Christensen, Richard Sax, Catherine Reynolds, and many others.
